Hinsdale Middle School: Our Legacy and Commitment

Hinsdale Middle School is proud to be a U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon School. This prestigious award reflects our unwavering commitment to our students’ growth, not only intellectually but also as emerging young adults and community members. We treat our students as we would treat our own children—with empathy, support, and boundless enthusiasm. Go Spartans!

A History of Excellence in Education

The tradition of education on the corner of Third Street and Garfield Avenue in downtown Hinsdale, which began with the first schoolhouse built in 1866, reflects a rich and enduring legacy for our community.

Here is the historical timeline of our site:

  • 1866: The very first schoolhouse was built on this property at Third and Garfield by William Robbins.
  • 1879–1950: The site became home to Hinsdale High School in 1879. Although the original building burned down in 1894, it was immediately rebuilt on the same foundation. In 1950, when the current high school building opened elsewhere, the Third and Garfield building transitioned into the Junior High.
  • 1976: A new building opened on the property after the 1894 structure was condemned.
  • 1990: The name was officially changed to Hinsdale Middle School following the move of the 6th grade to the facility.
  • 2016: Years of growth in the area contributed to the need for a larger, more modern Middle School building. After the successful passage of a referendum, construction began in November 2016.
  • 2019: Our beautiful current facility was completed, proudly standing on the exact site of the original 1894 building, continuing the tradition of excellence.

When students enter the doors of HMS, they find a curriculum that goes above and beyond state and national standards, a rich encore program, and extracurricular options that help them find and develop their individual interests and passions.

A Message from Principal Cory Burke
It's a true honor to serve as Principal of Hinsdale Middle School. Before stepping into this role three years ago, I spent nine years nurturing young minds as a Language Arts teacher, followed by eight years as an Assistant Principal in District 54.

During my journey in education, I've come to deeply believe that every single student possesses the potential to learn and grow. I'm passionate about cultivating strong, supportive relationships between students and teachers, setting high yet achievable expectations, and fostering a genuine partnership with our amazing community. I firmly believe that these cornerstones are essential for creating a vibrant learning environment where all our students can thrive.

I'm incredibly proud of the remarkable accomplishments of our students and the dedication of our dedicated staff at HMS. I look forward to continuing to work alongside them, collaborating closely to provide an engaging and enriching educational experience for every single student.

Warmly,

Cory Burke Principal,

Hinsdale Middle School
